I'll be interested to talk to you more about her when next we talk in person. For now, let it suffice for me to say that I'm uncomfortable with Catholics self-identifying as "gay" and going on about how great gay culture is even if they are celibate. Also, homosexuality is gravely disordered and the Church should not change its way of talking about that.
Ms. Tushnet strikes me as a very very strange anomaly, not a template for a new vision of how people with same-sex attraction should interact with that problem or of the way the Church should handle people struggling with that problem. Largely because it is just that, a problem.
Gosh, John, I was about to say how much I liked this article, (and how much it reminds me of a mutual friend of ours), and how this girl really seems to have it together.
And then I read what Matt said.
Matt — I think it is ordinary and usual, that is it's the human condition, to want things you shouldn't have. I would never judge somebody on what they wanted, I would judge them on how they deal with it. Lots of men want women, and so they go to strippers and use pornography, which I condemn. This woman wants women, yet she is celibate, is this not to be admired?
For the record, just what is your model for how people with "same-sex attraction should interact with the problem?"
